Event Details

If your daughter or one of the girls in your program were in a relationship where she was being controlled, hit, talked down to or sexually pressured, can you say with 100% certainty that she would tell you about it the first time it happened or would she be too embarrassed thinking she should "know better?" Would she recognize the warning signs early on before she gets in too deep? Would she stay in the relationship hoping he'll change and that things will get better? Does she understand what a healthy relationship looks like, even if she's not dating now so that she can make empowered dating choices in the future?

Here are some important facts about girls and dating violence: 1.) One in five high school girls have been physically or sexually abused by a dating partner.  2.) 40% of teenage girls ages 14 to 17 say they know someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend. 3.) Nearly 80% of girls who have been victims of physical abuse in their dating relationships continue to date the abuser. 4.) When female high school students were asked who they would talk to if someone they date is attempting to control them, insults them, or physically harms them, nearly 80% percent said they would confide in a friend, while only 10% said they would talk to their parents, teachers or possibly the police. What does this mean for you as a service provider? For starters, it means that teen dating violence is a serious issue and if you are currently facilitating a group for girls then this is an issue that you must build into your sessions. The purpose of this workshop is to assist service providers who work with girls in starting a dialogue on teen dating violence. Topics covered in this workshop include:

·         What Is Dating Violence and How To Tell If A Relationship Is Abusive;

·         Common Myths That Keep Girls In Abusive Relationships;

·         5 Critical Questions That You Must Ask In Order To Get Girls Thinking and Talking About The Issue of Teen Dating Abuse and How It Impacts Them;

·         Healthy Relationship Remix: What Qualities Are Present In A Healthy Relationship;

·         Getting Help With Ending An Abusive Relationship.
